Cynthia Calvillo accuses Jessica Eye of Missing Weight Intentionally

Las Vegas, NV | June 14, 2020, 10:21 p.m.

Cynthia Calvillo accused Jessica Eye of intentionally missing the weight for UFC on ESPN 10 fight in which Calvillo was the winner. It's a tactic fighters have used in the past to give eachother an edge over their opponent.

To give context to this fight, Calvillo moved up in weight to the 125 pound flyweight division.  Jessica Eye was the number 1 contender and in a good position to fight Velentina Shevchenko for the title. Before the fight, at the weigh in, Jessica was over the weight limit by 0.2 pounds. Calvillo says, she was over by a lot more.

During the fight, Cynthia started slowly. It was clearly visible that Eye was not just the heavier puncher but also the bigger of the two. Eye had a slight edge on that round. In round 2, Cynthia Calvillo stepped on the gas pedal and was able to get a big take down to steal the round. Rounds 3 and 4 were similar to round 2 having Cynthia go toe to toe with Eye in striking but also taking down Jessica to the canvas. Round 5 was just the icing on the cake for Calvillo who not only outpointed Eye in striking, but also took her down at the end of the 5th. It was a clear victory and an impressive one for the smaller fighter.

During the post fight conference, Calvillo showed her frustration at Jessica Eye by suggesting that Jessica Eye intentionally missed the weight. "to be honest, she did not miss weight by .2, she missed weight by a lot more", Calvillo commented during the presser.  she went on to say, "we received a text message from her coach letting us know that she was going to miss weight by 3.5 pounds". That means Jessica was fighting as a bantamweight and not as a flyweight.

Calvillo added. "when I missed weight, I lock myself in the hotel and I freaking cry for hours. I wasn't running around f***ng smiling".

The fight is in the past  and Calvillo was victorious. She is now in position to fight Shevchenko for the title. The strawweight champion is Weili Zhang. Valentina Shevchenko is the flyweight king and Amand Nunes is the reigning champion of the women's bantamweight and featherweight divisions.
