Anthony Dirrell Could be Next for Canelo

Los Angeles, CA | June 5, 2020, 4:39 a.m.

Boxing is coming back, we hope. Rumors are going around that one of those fights will be Canelo Alvarez vs Anthony Dirrell. Canelo was supposed to fight Billy Joe Saunders for the WBO belt. A fight that had more buzz since the undefeated British fighter has won over Lemieux, Akavov, Lee and Monroe among others.  All that went up in flames after Covid-19 arrived and turned everything upside down.

Mexican’s expect Canelo to fight during Mexican independence weekend (September 15th). With that date approaching, Golden Boy promotions is looking for an opponent for Canelo.  Recently Golden Boy showed interest in Dirrell who is coming off a loss to Benavides via 9th round knockout. At 35 most pundits give Dirrell little chance of beating Canelo.  One could say that this is a tune up fight for bigger opponents such as Derevyachenko, Saunders or even Jermall Charlo.

Canelo signed an 11 fight contract that will pocket him $365 million. His first fight under DAZN was when he fought Rocky Fielding back in December 2018. Since that fight, he’s fought and beat Daniel Jacobs and Sergey Kovalev.

Whatever his opponent is, we all hope that he can do better than Dirrell. Fans want to see good fights and not predictable ones. There are many worthy opponents lined up to take a shot at one of the best boxers in the world today.
