Finally, we got to see the sweet science back again. Top Rank promotions put a 5 fight card that featured Shakur Stevenson as its main event. Stevenson delivered, as always, but the undercards were just to showcase prospects against...well, who knows.
Let's start with the cuban sensation Robeisy Ramirez who delivered a TKO in the 54 second of the first round. The two time olympic gold medalist fought Yeuri Andujar from the Dominican Republic. It was obvious that Ramirez was the better fighter but in 54 seconds, and with the quality of opponent, it is hard to determine how good Ramirez really is.
In the second fight, Quatavious Cash got a six round technical decision over Calvin Metcalf due to a cut over Metcalf's left eye. The injury was due to a clash of heads in the second round. It was an entertaining fight in the middleweight division. Unfortunately it was cut short.
This fight was a flop. The Italian Guido Vianello is a legitimate heavyweight prospect. Unfortunately his opponent had nothing to offer. He went down in the 1st round from a chopping right hand. Haynesworth was hurt right after getting up from the canvas but seemed fine after the count started. It isn't clear if he said something that may have prompted the referee to stop the fight.
Anderson is another Heavyweight prospect and a good one too. A confident young man who showed some good combinations. He stopped Langston in the 3rd round via TKO. Langston showed the heart but it was clear that Anderson had a big edge.
Finally in the main event, Shakur delivered a sixth round KO via a vicious body shot. Shakur dominated the Puerto Rican from start to finish. Steven at 22, is a well developed fighter. He has terrific footwork, sits well on his punches, is just as dangerous going back and has amazing accuracy. His defense is par none. This is no exaggeration as he takes little damage on every fight. The featherweight division could see great fights involving Shakur. Leo Santa Cruz, Gary Russel Jr and Josh Warrington are the other champions in the division.
Overall it was an ok night of boxing. It would have been nice to see Mikaela Mayer vs Helen Joseph. That fight was promising but COVIND-19 stepped in. What we got was 5 very predictable fights. The gap between the fighters who were expected to win and their opponents was too wide. Fans tune in to see drama, the unpredictable and back and forth action. Let's hope the next cards will have some of the ingredients that make boxing the theater of the unexpected.
